audio-loop: 8:40

The four-part exhibition and discussion series "In the sound field" presented sound art working methods for field recording. For the fourth part with Kirsten Reese and Georg Klein the artist and producer of the label "Gruenrekorder" Lasse-Marc Rieck from Frankfurt has been invited (introduction and moderation: Golo Föllmer).

"Le Due Forze di Taranto" is a site-specific work that has been adapted for the ES gallery space.

The istallation has three parts, working with the conflicts of this city in South-Italy in a site-specific installation on two levels. The city is trapped between two forces – the steel and petrochemical industry in the northwest and the navy in the southeast (NATO military port) - and both they are polluting the air, the ground and the sea since decades, and they are restricting the live of the people in a physical way by walls and forbidden areas. Since some years the residents of the city are protesting, independently from parties and unions, but also trapped by Taranto's big dilemma: to protest against the main employers of the city.

The installation brings the political forces together in a condensed, aesthetic situation, with two double-sided photo plates were installed in the store window of the gallery. They represent the two ruling powers, standing vis-à-vis, visible on the street level, but standing with their back to the passers-by. On the second side of these plates there are shown two distinctive parts of the walls which cut through the city, one by the wide area of the 'Marina Militare', one by the huge steel plant 'ILVA'.

But from the back a third force gets a voice, represented by a member of the independent organisation "Commitato". In opposition to the representatives in front his face ist visible and also his voice is audible. Out of an interview with him on his personal live as native Tarantino, as a worker in the steel plant and as a political activist a speech collage was made, broken by the disruption between work and health, between environmentalism and breadwinning, interrupted by field recording sounds of special locations in the town, ILVA and the navy. The sound collages have four parts which could be started by a touch point on the wall.

All works of the four parts of the exhibition were distributed as a postcard series with printed QR codes for retrieving the respective audio files. These QR codes were also attached to the outside wall, so that it was possible for passers-by to listen to them outside the opening hours.
